The history of Porsche actually begins long before the first model was released. It was 1900 when Ferdinand Porsche built an electric vehicle which later became the basis for the first Porsche model. He later founded his own engineering office in Stuttgart, Germany, and went to work. It wasn’t until June 8, 1948 (recognized by most to be the birthday for Porsche) that the first car with a Porsche nameplate was approved: the 356 “No. 1” Roadster. It was a two-seater that delivered just 40 horsepower. Interestingly enough, most of the mechanical components of the 356 Roadster were derived from the Volkswagen Beetle. There was only one model made, and today it can be found at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Later in 1963 the predecessor for the 356, the Porsche 911, was introduced and continues to be one of the best-selling Porsche models still to this day.
